Meet the world’s smallest penguins
As dusk settles over Caroline Bay, keep an eye out for Timaru’s little penguins. Little penguins/kororā, make their way ashore to their nesting areas along Marine Parade, Caroline Bay. From October to March, find a spot along the Marine Parade viewing area and watch quietly as they waddle home for the evening. Remember to keep your distance, stay on the footpath to give the penguins space.

Chase the breathtaking views
Head out on a walk to see some of the district’s best scenery. At Tūhawaiki (Jack’s) Point, the rugged coastline and lighthouse make a spectacular setting for a coastal walk. Little Mount Peel (Huatakerekere), a 4-6 hour hike, offers sweeping views across the South Canterbury landscape.
Discover our cultural heritage
Connect with Timaru district’s culture, stories and whenua at Te Ana Māori Rock Art Centre. Explore the state of the art, interactive centre, learn about the rock art and discover the significance of the landscapes where it can be found. Take a long lunch
Make lunch an occasion at Pier 64, where great food comes with views across Caroline Bay. With fresh, locally inspired dishes and plenty to pair with a glass of wine, cold beer or cocktail, it’s a spot made for lingering. Sit back, take in the views and enjoy a long lunch by the coast.
